Weight loss and why diets do not work

Weight loss and why diets do not work

The diet industry is worth millions - if not billions of dollars.  People sign up for some new diet that promises a new you in a few weeks with minimum effort.  Long term, though, few of these diets work.

Chances are, you have tried a variety of diets in the past and, although you may have lost a few kilos - even reached your goals; when you went back to 'normal' eating, the weight crept back on.  There is also the whole concept of 'a diet' - depriving yourself of certain foods, feeling hungry all the time.

  • You may want to lose weight because you want to look better, fit into the clothes in the back of your wardrobe.
  • You may want to lose weight to feel healthier or fitter.
  • Or it might be that your doctor has told you that you need to

We all know what we should and shouldn't eat.  Knowing it and actually doing it are quite different though.  Will power alone is often not enough.  Throw in stress and general life pressure and it can feel impossible. We know we shouldn't...but there is a celebration of some sort and we end up 'treating' ourselves...or we feel depressed and chocolate/icecream/chips make us feel better....and so we indulge.  Then we feel bad and we feel like a failure - again.

 Do things differently...

If you want to make sustainable long term changes to your weight management and food choices, you actually need to be aware of your beliefs around food and the associations you have.  It is about self awareness and changing habits. Once new habits are firmly established it doesn't feel like deprivation.  Your taste buds change (trust me, they do!), you start to feel healthier, your brain rewires and you actually crave nutritious, healthy food.

Develop your "Why-power"!

So how do you change your eating habits?  Develop your why-power! Think of all the benefits and what life will be like once you are your ideal weight and making healthy eating habits.  Think of yourself on a crossroads.  If you continue on the same path as you have been on, where are you likely to be in, say, 5 years time? 10 years?  What will you look like? How will you feel?  What are you likely to doing - or not doing?

What will life be like if you were to take a different path?  Think about how you will look, how you will feel, what you will be doing.....Now, ask yourself which future you prefer.  If you choose to take a different path, what are the actions you need to take?  Get together a detailed plan!

As a clinical hypnotherapist, I help people build their 'why-power' and put to gether their plan.  Hypnosis can really help 'turbo charge' the re-wiring process - therefore making it so much easier to form and keep new habits.
